Innovative Game Interaction Technology Integrating VR Gestures with Chinese Traditional Culture

Objective: Address weak gesture interaction and insufficient cultural understanding in VR traditional culture games.

Methods:

·  Conducted in-depth interviews with practitioners and intangible cultural heritage (ICH) inheritors, alongside literature review and analysis.

·  Designed five VR gesture interaction modes (movement, continuous, teleportation, single/double-hand following) incorporating ICH elements, followed by testing and optimization.

Results:

·  Proposed a design solution integrating Chinese traditional culture with VR gesture interaction, presented at the 2nd Virtual Reality Innovation Development Forum.

·  Applied the results to the VR first-person combat game Exorcist, exhibited at the UAL “2023 Game Collaboration Show”.

Contribution: Independently developed the interaction system prototype, wrote the technical proposal, and presented the conference report.

Abstract:

Given the increasing impact of gesture capture interaction design in virtual reality (VR) games, both the VR market and the player base have continuously expanded in recent years. However, in games that combine VR with traditional Chinese culture, the interaction design mainly depends on game controllers, while the hand interaction system requires additional advancement. To expand the potential of Chinese traditional culture in the VR industry, the author has a set of VR gesture-based interaction systems, including five distinct modes of VR gesture interaction: Moving interaction, Continuous interaction, Flash interaction, Single-hand follow interaction, and Double-hand spread interaction and integrate these modes with traditional Chinese culture. This approach innovatively combines gestures with Taoist culture, fills the lack of comprehension of traditional Chinese culture in VR gesture games, and offers guidelines and a comprehensive reference for interactive design in VR gesture games.
